Securing Our Elections

Plaintiffs in League of Women Voters of Massachusetts v. Trump supplemented their complaint on August 26 to challenge the US Postal Service’s newly finalized mail ballot rule and asked the court for emergency relief to block its implementation for the November election.
A coalition of pro-voter organizations, including the League of Women Voters of South Dakota, filed a lawsuit on August 24 seeking to ensure South Dakota’s new documentary proof of citizenship voter registration law complies with federal law.

Voting Rights in the Courts

On August 3, the District Court of Maryland blocked a US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) rule that prevented nonpartisan civic engagement groups like the League from helping new citizens register to vote at administrative naturalization ceremonies.
The US District Court for the District of Minnesota on August 17 became the twenty-third court to dismiss the Justice Department's lawsuit demanding unlawful disclosure of private voter data.
A district court in Arkansas ruled on August 21 that restrictions on canvassers engaging in the ballot initiative process violated the First Amendment. The court had previously struck down provisions that sought to make it harder for voters to use the ballot initiative process to make laws.

Happening at the League

The League joined Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation as historic partner, and CEO Celina Stewart has been named to the Council of Ambassadors.
LWV’s nationwide “Unite & Rise for Voting Rights” Day of Action galvanized communities across the country as it commemorates the 61st anniversary of the Voting Rights Act
LWV expanded investment in state and local Leagues following a record year of democracy impact.
The League of Women Voters strongly opposed confirmation of Todd Blanche as US Attorney General.
The League announced the full slate of trustees serving on the League of Women Voters Education Fund (LWVEF) Board of Trustees.
On the one-year anniversary of the Trump administration's oppressive actions in the District of Columbia, LWV has called for relief and statehood.

The League in the News

League CEO Celina Stewart talked with Holly Corbett at Forbes in honor of Women’s Equality Day about what voting rights for women look like today and the lessons that we have and continue to learn from our suffragette foremothers. You can read the article here.

Celina also stopped by FOX5 on August 26 to give explanation to the confusion around the mail ballot fight happening in the courts and the effect it is having on ongoing primaries and the midterms in November. Watch the FOX5 segment here.
